With its lacy leaves, the Ming Aralia adorns any home or office. The Ming Aralia is easy to maintain as well as decorative, adding style and grace to their surroundings.
Unlike plants that branch sideways, the Ming Aralia grows vertically. The Ming Aralia has bonsai qualities in that it is greatly improved by trimming and training. The tips of the Aralia are trimmed in order to encourage more rapid branching and thicken the trunk. The joints, which are closely set, then produce a thick growth of branches and a dense covering of leaves. The stems zigzag, forming a complex candelabra making it an exquisite plant to enjoy.

They come in 4″ or 6″ containers and can be then groomed into a bonsai plant. Theses particular varieties of plants are used specifically to create bonsai. The four most popular selling bonsai starts are as follows:
2. Luseane Bonsai – The Luseane Bonsai is also referred to as a draft Schefflera Arboricola. This particular bonsai plant, however, was patented and named after the person who invented it, Luseane. Here again, you will notice a small 4″ pot and multiple branches that can be trimmed and groomed into a bonsai.
3. Ficus Nerifolia – The Ficus Nerifolia Bonsai Start has narrow long leaves. It can come with a straight truck or coiled truck as noticed in the pictures below. Again, what we look for in a bonsai plant are multiple branches that can be pinched, trimmed and groomed into shapes that are desirable and create the Art of Bonsai.
4. Ficus Green Island Bonsai- The fourth most popular bonsai start is the Ficus Green Island Bonsai Start. You will see a theme with the top four selling bonsai in the multiple branches that can be trimmed and shaped into the desired shape of your bonsai plant. I was recently in Japan and saw a bonsai plant that was hundreds of years old and shaped in a circle.

Continue ReadingTillandsia is the scientific name for air plants. There are many different varieties of air plants and they range in size from as small as one’s thumb to 12″ or so. Tillandsia are bare root plants, so they do not grow or require to be planted in soil. They are a great novelty item and can compliment many holidays as they are often packaged as a gift items. They are also great sold individually as a “grab and go” purchase for a garden center. In winter, when many garden center’s have limited heated space, air plants can add a new revenue stream and a comfortable profit margin.
Because air plants are so light and do not take up a lot of space, they can be shipped overnight to garden center’s and do not have to meet minimum trucking requirements. Miami Tropical Plants regularly ship Tillandsia to garden center’s in the U.S.A. and Canada. Also know that in winter, the airplants are shipped with heat packs and insulated boxes to protect them during shipping.
Airplants can be marketed individually or as part of a gift item. For example, they are often made into dish gardens or inserted into glass globes for the Christmas season and ceramic pumpkins for Halloween.
Below are pictures of several different varieties of Tillandsia:
Tillandsia-Aeranthos-13
Tillandsia Ionantha Mexican
